Greensboro North Carolina
received its name from Major General Nathanael Greene who was the commander of the American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House. This famous battle which is known as a decisive battle in the Revolutionary War took place on March 15, 1781. Although the British held the field after this battle they also lost a quarter of their army allowing Greene and his army to slip away.
Greensboro was officially established as the Guilford County seat in 1808.
This was decided because Greensboro was located
at the exact center of the state. Growth was very gradual due to the fact that much of the area was covered with water. In fact, only 369 residents were recorded as of 1821. In the early decades Greensboro was truly a frontier town. Due to the steam powered cotton mill that came about in Greensboro, the town began to flourish. This brought a lot of business and wealth to Greensboro with many cotton materials being exported to bordering states and countries.
In 1840 Governor Morehead requested that Greensboro be included in the new railway line making the city the transportation hub for the state. This allowed the city to grow substantially in size with the railroad transporting to and from textile mills
allowing Greensboro’s own mill villages to prosper. Historically, Greensboro’s railroad was also used to help runaway slaves escape to their freedom in the North. At the time Greensboro’s economy boomed with new industry
in textiles as the main trade. Many of the businesses that began at this time remained in existence until the 21st century. At this time most of the businesses either became bankrupt or merged with other companies. Today Greensboro is still a major textile headquarter city with main offices of many large corporations. The railroad still holds great importance to the city and is a major regional freight hub.
